The New Puppy

puppy1 10/15/04: So after talking about getting a puppy for the past few years, this week we finally decided to Just Do It. Today Rob went to Daisy Hill Puppy Farm Windy Meadow Farm in Wolcott, VT, and picked up the cutest little puppy since, well, since Hobee was a puppy.

The little towel has her mother's scent on it, to help the puppy not feel so homesick. She doesn't seem very homesick, actually, and is comfortable with us already and is very happy on the green leather couch. Calvin gave her some water and some of her food, and she gobbled both right up. puppy2

puppy3 Hobee isn't quite sure what to make of the new puppy, he really hasn't been around any puppies this small before.

We're giving both of them a lot of love (a tough job!) and Hobee doesn't seem jealous. puppy4

puppy5 The puppy is passed out on the couch as I write this, she wakes up and stretches from time to time, and goes right back to sleep. Hobee is asleep at my feet. I'm in happy doggy land right now ;)

10/16: So, what to name this little puppy? We've considered a bunch of names. Her fur is a caramel color, and we liked "barley" (of the many beer-related terms that were tossed around), and late last night "Caramel Barley" had a nice sound to it. So today we've been calling her Carley (of course), and it seems to be working. puppy6

10/17: Hobee and Carley played together a lot outside today. One chased the other, and they nipped and rolled around. It's so good to see them getting along and playing! Calvin has added ramps to the living room couches so Carley can get up and down by herself.

The dogs went with us to Petsmart today to get chew toys and puppy food. They were both well behaved, and of course everyone wanted to pet the Cute Little Puppy(tm). Carley is really enjoying her new chew toy.

10/31: Carley, quietly chewing on a bit of rawhide and laying across Rob's boots. She's feeling quite at home, and getting a lot better about hitting the newspapers. She's friends with Tucker, the dog next door, and getting along famously with Hobee.

puppy8 Jan 2005: Carley has grown a lot, she's over 30 pounds and getting heavier all the time. She still has her really soft puppy fur, but her backside is starting to get curly. Carley now understands "sit," "shake," and (very recently) "give me five." If only she would speak when she needs to go out!

This picture makes it look like Carley is as big as Hobee, but she's nowhere near his size. She's definitely looking more like a small dog than a puppy. puppy9
